On Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, over 25 student organizations participated in the 3rd annual Tipoff Tailgate. This successful and highly spirited event, sponsored by Student Government Association, Duquesne Program Council and Athletics, was organized to encourage student attendance for the nationally televised men’s basketball game against the La Salle Explorers. During this pre-game event, students got to enjoy music, free food, corn hole and other games. Following the Tipoff Tailgate, students went on to support the “Red-Out” inside of the A. J. Palumbo Center where nearly 1,000 students cheered on our Dukes. This was the largest student attendance in the Palumbo Center history. The crowd of over 2,500 was treated to a special half-time show that included Olate Dogs, the season seven winners on America’s Got Talent.
Prior to the Tipoff Tailgate, various competitions took place such as a Banner Competition, won by the Junior Class Council, and a T-shirt Design Contest, where the Delta Zeta sorority took top honors. The winning t-shirt design was printed on 3,000 shirts that were distributed at the game. Also, earlier in the week, a Dinner with the Dukes event was held at the new Blue Line Grill. While there, students got to meet and greet the Dukes basketball players and coaches and enjoyed being interviewed by ESPN 970.
