The Duquesne SPIRIT Campaign

Number 11 on Expectations of a Duquesne Student states: “Be proud of Duquesne, show school spirit and support University Activities.”

The Duquesne Athletics Department, the Student Government Association and the Red & Blue Crew (RBC; the Student Cheering Section & Support Group for Athletics) are joining forces to create something that will hopefully become more commonplace on campus: Red & Blue Spirit.

Assistant Director of Marketing & Promotions for Athletics, Nicole Bucholtz, is working directly with SGA President, Attila Mahalik, RBC President Angela Palchowski and Alida Narcisi, the RBC Liaison to SGA, to improve collaboration amongst Athletics, RBC and SGA.

“We’ve been brainstorming and working on initiatives to enhance school spirit on campus since I got here in 2011; however, it’s exciting to actually be activating an entire campaign with SGA and the RBC in support of our teams and all student organizations,” Bucholtz says.

The Duquesne SPIRIT Campaign kicked off an inaugural “First Friday” on September 6th where Athletics encouraged campus to wear Red & Blue, handed out Red & Blue Smiley Cookies and promoted upcoming home athletic events that weekend. They also asked students to Tweet pictures of themselves to the @GoDuquesne Twitter account wearing Dukes gear – those that did so received a free Dukes Prize Pack. The next “First Friday” is Oct. 4.

The goal is to have a different student organization or student recognized on campus monthly for their dedication to the university, promote upcoming events, and in turn host “First Friday” on campus that month. It’s a spirited way to promote all of the great things Duquesne students do and encourage students to support each other all year long.

Other events throughout the year include Dinner with the Dukes in the Union NiteSpot, the annual Tipoff Tailgate with Men’s Basketball, Homecoming Kickoff Pep Rally, BBQ & Powder Puff game, Family Weekend, Power Madness hosted by Intramurals, and Greek Life’s Carnival. A new student-only event this year will be the Dukes Madness Basketball Tipoff Tournament hosted by the Men’s & Women’s Basketball programs and Intramurals on Oct. 17.
