The Duquesne Athletics Department announced their 2014-2015 promotional schedule for the men’s basketball season in September, and on the list this year included a giveaway to honor a very special member of the Duquesne University family, Fr. Sean Hogan, C.S.Sp. A one-of-a-kind Fr. Hogan Bobble Head will be available for the first 1,000 fans that attend the Duquesne Dukes men’s basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. against Rhode Island at the Palumbo Center. During the month of February 2015, the Gumberg Library will be conducting an online survey to assess how well the library is serving the needs of Duquesne students, faculty, and staff. The Gumberg Library has conducted the LibQUAL+ survey every three years since 2006 to track service quality over time. LibQUAL+ offers the opportunity for students to help the library understand how to better fulfill the University mission. Those who participate in the survey will be entered in a drawing to win a variety of prizes. In previous years, the library has offered such prizes as iPads, Kindles, and gift cards. Continue reading
Every year the Duquesne Dukes have the opportunity to play a few select games in the CONSOL Energy Center. On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Duquesne Dukes play Dayton. Mark your calendars for this exciting game! Duquesne Athletics and the Office of Freshmen Development will be offering reduced prices on tickets for Duquesne families, as well as some pregame events on campus we would love to see you at.
It’s that time of year! Room Selection is approaching for the 2015-2016 academic year. Here is some important information that you will need to know.
- Each student will be required to make a non-refundable $300.00 deposit. Deposits must be submitted to the Cashier’s Office in the Administration building. Please keep your receipt. You will need it to select your lottery number.
- Lottery numbers will be selected in the Assumption Hall Lobby from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 25-27 and March 9-11.
- Room Selection for Current Sophomores and higher will occur on March 11, 2015 in the Duquesne Union Ballroom.
- Room Selection for Current Freshmen will occur on March 12, 2015 in the Duquesne Union Ballroom.
- The buildings available for selection are Assumption Hall, Brottier Hall, Des Places Hall, Duquesne Towers and Vickroy Hall.

The Duquesne University Class of 2018 arrived on campus for Move-In on Aug. 19 and then participated in the five-day, student-run Orientation program, which helps incoming freshmen and other new students make the transition into college life and become familiar with the University.

One of the smartest and most diverse classes on record at Duquesne University arrived on campus for the start of the new academic year. An estimated 1,360 freshmen, among the University’s ten largest classes in history, was also among its most selective, with an acceptance rate of 73 percent, according to Debbie Zugates, director of undergraduate admission. Spearheaded by the Rev. Sean Hogan, C.S.Sp., executive vice president for student life, the project was a joint effort by Tim Lewis, director of commuter affairs, and Tom White, University archivist. Jeff Mallory has been named director of multicultural affairs in the Division of Student Life, effective June 2. His primary responsibility is to help develop the diverse student population by providing support services and opportunities for learning.
Mallory most recently worked in multicultural student life and campus life at his alma mater of Saint Vincent College, where he earned a degree in public policy in 2006 and a master’s in business management with a concentration in operational excellence in 2013. Continue reading

The Incline, previously known as The Off Ramp, received a major renovation and name change over the summer. Now called The Incline, the space has been opened up for a better flow, brightened up for a better atmosphere and updated with a more modern look. The Incline now has fresh, hand-tossed brick oven pizzas, new baked pasta dishes at the Rustica station, sushi and grab’n go, Build-a-Burger grill station and fresh, hand-crafted salads at Salads by Design. The Duquesne University Tamburitzans folk music and dance ensemble, known as “The Tammies,” will become an independent, nonprofit organization over the next two to three years, and for the first time will audition students from other universities, as well as Duquesne. Continue reading

Each academic year, students encounter new and common challenges that affect their learning and development. Over 100 new students attended Commuter Pre-Orientation on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The pre-orientation program assisted commuter students in getting to know their Commuter Assistant, the Office of Commuter Affairs staff, other commuters and to become more familiar with campus. Continue reading
Commuter Council always does their best to provide opportunities for commuters to have fun and be informed. They hosted their annual beginning of the year picnic on Sept. 19. The commuters were treated to a free barbecue dinner and many games at the always popular event. Continue reading
With the start of the new academic year, Health Service is pleased to announce its recent expansion of three new offices, in the adjacent area formerly occupied by the University Counseling Center, which is now the University Counseling and Wellbeing Center, centrally located in Fisher Hall. - The fourth floor bathrooms on both the East and West sides of St. Ann were renovated.
- With completion of the third, fourth and fifth floors, the Towers bathroom renovation project is now complete, as is the furniture replacement project.
- The floor renovation project in Towers continued, with the ninth, tenth and eleventh floors being completed.
- Seventy-five more units in Brottier have been fully furnished.
- In Towers, the B-side stairwell is now accessible for residents traveling to and from the lobby, thanks to a total redesign of the lobby area as well as the addition of card readers throughout the stairwell.
- Flooring was replaced in several locations throughout St. Martin, Assumption and Brottier.

During Homecoming, Gumberg Library will feature archival footage of football and basketball games from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, including basketball’s NIT Championship game at Madison Square Garden in 1955. Additionally, Gumberg will share a selection of photographs, yearbooks and other items from the University Archives that document Duquesne University’s rich history. Stop by Gumberg during Homecoming week to view these archival gems.
On Friday, Oct. 3., 4-6 p.m., Gumberg Library will host an Alumni Poetry Reading in collaboration with the English Department. Duquesne alumni Cameron Barnett, Elizabeth Savage, Robert Giannotta and current student Samantha Leon will join former Pennsylvania Poet Laureate and Distinguished Professor Emeritus Samuel Hazo in reading from their works.
Gumberg Library will host an art exhibition that commemorates the 2014 centenary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon. The exhibition, titled Moving Targets, will open on Nov. 10 and continue through Dec. 6. Continue reading

There are several Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) initiatives that we would like to highlight for the 2014-2015 academic year at Duquesne University. The OMA Book Club was launched in September. The club will select and review one book per month during the academic year. The club is open to any member of the Duquesne University community. Nationally, there are approximately 3,300 campus-related housing fires each year including both on-campus and off-campus student housing. On average there are 7 deaths, 46 injuries, and $25 million in property damage each year. According to the Center for Campus Fire Safety, between January 2000 and March 2014, 123 people lost their lives in campus related fires. While most of these deaths occur in off-campus housing, there have been nine deaths on-campus and ten deaths in Greek housing. For the past four years, The Princeton Review has rated Duquesne the highest possible score (99) in its Fire Safety Rating Honor Roll. Continue reading
Residence Life completed a one week intensive training for our 96 Resident Assistants in mid-August. Building community, crisis response, understanding the University Mission Statement and bystander awareness were only a few of the topics covered to prepare RA’s to support and serve our resident students. Applications for the 2015-16 year will be available on the Residence Life web site in early December.
