Enter into the Spirit of Giving for the United Way

Concern for the poor and marginalized was the primary inspiration for the foundation of Duquesne University, and that commitment to serving the community continues this month with the kick-off of the 2011 United Way Campaign.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, the solicitor’s breakfast will energize those employees who have volunteered to encourage and coordinate donors from their departments, schools and offices on campus.

“This is another opportunity to show that the Duquesne community is a generous one, ready and willing to help those who are less fortunate,” said President Charles J. Dougherty in his annual United Way letter.  “Because of the economy and especially the high unemployment rate, so many of our neighbors need us more than ever.”

This year’s United Way chairs are Rod Dobish, director of building services and operations for facilities management, and Mary McIntyre, assistant to the president.

“Our campaign goal is $85,000, and we expect at least 35 percent participation,” said Dobish. “We are always impressed by the innovative ways that our community pitches in, from bake sales and pumpkin rolls to the dunking booth.”

Online donations will be accepted from Oct. 13 to Nov. 23. In 2010, Duquesne donated $82,000, which United Way of Allegheny County distributed to agencies that offer health and human services to improve the lives of individuals and families in need.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, employees can donate for a chance to soak their colleagues at the dunk tank on the Mellon Hall patio. A campus-wide luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 27, will include a special speaker and raise additional funds through a silent auction and door prizes.
