The Spiral of Life, a new symbol for the evolution of life, was conceptualized by Dr. John A. Pollock, associate professor of biological sciences, and brought to life by artist Joana Ricou. Through online voting, it  was chosen as among the top 10 in the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.

Versions of the mural, which was created for the multi-museum 2009 Darwin at 200 celebration, are on display at the Pittsburgh Zoo, the National Aviary and the Carnegie Science Center.
