24th Annual Spring Clean-Up Slated for Saturday

Duquesne faculty, staff and students will team up to participate in the 24th annual Spring Clean-Up this Saturday, April 13. Sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry, the event draws hundreds of volunteers from both campus organizations and the local community to help clean up the South Side and the Hill District neighborhoods.

Duquesne’s community partners for Spring Clean-Up include UPMC, the Hill District Consensus Group, Clean Green Hill and others.

Campus Minister and Assistant Director of Spiritan Campus Ministry Luci-Jo DiMaggio said the focus of the event is bridging the Duquesne community with the surrounding neighborhoods.

“While we do get quite a lot of litter picked up and greening done on the day of the clean up, the bigger goal is really to get students working side by side with community residents so that they can talk and get to know one another,” explained DiMaggio. “In the end, the day is really about relationship-building with our neighbors.”

Check-in and breakfast for campus volunteers will be on the Mellon Hall Patio at 9 a.m. Free lunches will be provided by Taste of the Neighborhood on the South Side and Mr. Ribb’s, Z-Best Barbeque in the Hill District.
