St. Anthony’s Students Lauded at 8th Annual Disability Luncheon

Staff and faculty are invited to attend the 8th annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month luncheon at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Africa room.

This year’s topic, Celebrating the St. Anthony School Program: Because We Are Equal to the Task, will honor the St. Anthony School Program students and the work they do on campus. Gary Eiseman of the St. Anthony School Programs will serve as the keynote speaker.

St. Anthony School Programs is a Catholic-based inclusive educational environment for children ages 5-21 with autism, Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. For 60 years, St. Anthony School Programs has helped both Catholic and non-Catholic students with developmental disabilities live their lives to the fullest. The programs provide students with a unique, comprehensive educational program with individualized lesson plans and a safe, loving environment through which students may grow and become active and contributing members of society.

Many St. Anthony’s students participate in Duquesne’s post-secondary program. Here, young adult students with special needs receive vocational and mobility training, gain independent living skills and participate in many activities that are typical of a college-aged student.

Sponsored by the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity and the Division of Mission and Identity, the annual luncheon is designed to raise awareness among the University community about disabilities.

The luncheon is free, but employees are asked to RSVP in DORI by Monday, Oct. 21. For more information, contact the Division of Mission and Identity at 412.396.5097.
