Duquesne Names New Dean of the Mary Pappert School of Music

Dr. Seth Beckman has been named dean of the Mary Pappert School of Music effective Monday, Aug. 18. He will succeed Dr. Edward Kocher, who is returning to teaching full-time after serving as dean of music since 2000.

“Dr. Beckman brings a unique combination of leadership experience, as well as teaching, scholarship and excellence in performance to his new role,” said President Dr. Charles Dougherty. “In partnership with our exceptional music faculty, he will further enhance our school’s outstanding reputation and its longstanding tradition of preparing students for career success.”

Beckman is currently professor of music and senior associate dean in the College of Music at Florida State University, a position he has held since 2002.

“It is a distinct honor and privilege to have been selected to serve as dean of the Mary Pappert School of Music,” Beckman said. “It’s a comprehensive, highly successful school with an enormous amount of potential for the future. The distinguished faculty, dedicated staff, talented students and loyal base of alumni are tremendous.”

Beckman previously served as assistant director for enrollment management and student services at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) School of Music and was an associate and assistant professor of music at Bemidji State University.

“I’m looking forward to joining the Duquesne community, renowned for its academic and artistic excellence and well-established commitment to service,” said Beckman, a pianist who has performed as soloist, collaborative recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe.

Beckman earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Saint John’s University (Collegeville, Minn.), and a Master of Music and Doctor of Arts in music from Ball State University. He received additional, substantive training at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

In addition to his work as an administrator, musician and pedagogue, Beckman serves as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music. He also is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Performing Arts Leadership in Higher Education. Beckman has also published articles and pedagogy in various journals, including American Music Teacher.

Beckman has performed at concerts in New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and in France, Germany and Ukraine. He also has been featured on radio and television broadcasts, and has served as accompanist for national and international competitions and conferences.
