Gumberg and Law Libraries to Simplify User Searches

In a joint effort, Gumberg Library and the Law School’s Center for Legal Information will combine their holdings of over 1.2 million volumes through a new integrated library system that simplifies and improves access to library resources.

The system, Sierra, will deliver significant University savings over the next five years, while better meeting the needs of today’s library users through a new, simplified search process. Instead of engaging multiple search tools such as DUCat and SOLCAT to locate resources, the new system will allow users to find materials from a wide variety of sources in any format or discipline through a single search box.

According to University Librarian Dr. Laverna Saunders, Sierra is part of an ongoing effort to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty. “We are thrilled to offer an improved search experience for quality scholarly resources,” said Saunders.

Elements of the library catalog, such as the ability to place holds and view the real-time circulation status of items, as well as a search functionality similar to Google, will be incorporated. The new system also will update and streamline behind-the-scenes functions and services for library staff such as tracking orders and managing interlibrary loan requests.

Sierra is anticipated to launch in August to coincide with the new academic year.
