Faculty and Staff Invited to ‘Rejuvenate the Spirit’ During Homecoming 2014

In keeping with a renewed commitment to honor Duquesne’s Spiritan founders and charism, this year’s Homecoming theme is Rejuvenate the Spirit. Several events have been planned for the week leading up to Homecoming, during which faculty and staff can show their Duquesne pride and reconnect with the University’s mission.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, Saturday, Sept. 27, 6 to 7 p.m., Union Ballroom

    The Latin American Students Association will host a celebration with a performance and short lesson by Los Sabrosos Dance Co. showcasing salsa, merengue and bachata dances. Hispanic food from La Mendocina Argentine Catering and Chicken Latino will be served.

  • Water Walk, Sunday, Sept. 28, 1 p.m., Academic Walk

    As part of this year’s Heritage Week, the Duquesne community is invited to walk in solidarity “with” the millions of individuals who have to walk miles every day to gain access to clean water. Pre-registration is $10 (Sept. 22-26, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Union) and onsite registration is $15. All proceeds will be donated to Pure Thirst, a student organization with a chapter on campus.

  • Spirit Board Contest, Monday, Sept. 29, Academic Walk

    Student organizations are showing their Duquesne pride and competing for cash prizes. Take a stroll down A-walk and check out the spirited designs. The Alumni Board of Governors will vote on winners from a Greek division and a general division. Winners announced at the student pep rally on Thursday.

  • Our Motherland Event, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 6 to 9 p.m., Africa Room

    The Union of African Students will present an evening of African culture, with music and dance performances, and African cuisine. Questions can be directed to Aminata Soko.

  • Department Decorating Contest, Tuesday, Sept. 30 

    Faculty and staff are invited to show their Duquesne pride by decorating their department doors or offices with PutEmUp spirit! The winning department will win donuts and coffee for their team. Register your department today.

  • Battle of the Banks: Campus Blood Drive, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 4thFloor, Power Center

    Donate blood through the American Red Cross and help Duquesne raise more blood than its Homecoming opponents, West Liberty University.

  • University Birthday Celebration, Wednesday, Oct. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Academic Walk

    Celebrate 136 years of Duquesne University by visiting the birthday booths to sign the birthday banner and share what you love about Duquesne!

  • ISO Continent Night Thursday, Oct. 2, 4:30 p.m., Union Ballroom

    The International Students Organization (ISO) will present Spice It Up with South Asia: One Region, Many Worlds, a free celebration of art, culture, performances and authentic food. Questions can be directed to the ISO.

  • Veteran’s Memorial, Friday, Oct. 3, 3:30 p.m., Victory Garden

    Join Spiritan Campus Ministry and Veteran Affairs for a special service honoring Duquesne alumni who have served our country. Light refreshments will follow.

Festivities throughout Homecoming weekend include masses, class reunions, school breakfasts, Autumnfest with pre-game tailgate luncheon, the Duquesne Dukes vs. West Liberty football game, post-game tent party and Greek Celebration.
