Heritage Week Celebrates Founders, Spiritan History

Heritage Week, a campus-wide series of events sponsored by the Division of Mission and Identity to be held in conjunction with Homecoming, will focus on reconnecting the University with its founders and mission.

Organized by Luci-Jo DiMaggio, director of mission animation, this year’s Heritage Week will feature a series of events that will engage the University community in learning about its Spiritan history.

“Heritage Week is a great opportunity to celebrate our Spiritan roots as we create awareness of the Spiritan story on campus,” DiMaggio said.

Heritage Week begins on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. with the annual Water Walk, a fundraising event that raises awareness of the need for access to clean water in under-developed areas of the world. All proceeds from the Water Walk will be donated to Pure Thirst.

The campus community is invited to participate in several of the Heritage Week events, including:

  • Mass to Rejuvenate the Spirit, Sunday, Sept. 28, at 9 p.m., University Chapel
  • University Birthday Celebration, Wednesday, Oct. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Academic Walk, that will feature carnival games and prizes
  • Rita’s Italian Ice, Thursday, Oct. 2, 2 to 4 p.m., Academic Walk,
  • A campus-wide scavenger hunt, Tuesday, Sept 30, at 6 p.m.
  • Founders Day Mass, Thursday, Oct. 2, noon, University Chapel.

Additional events are also planned specifically for University students, including Spiritan trivia, a bulletin board contest and more.
