Madura Earns Duquesne Recognition from American Chemical Society

Dr. Jeffry Madura has been named the recipient of the 2014 Pittsburgh Award by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Dr. Jeffry Madura

Madura, the Lambert F. Minucci Endowed Chair in Engineering and Computational Sciences and a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is believed to be among a handful of Duquesne faculty members to win this award since its inception in 1932.

The award recognizes “outstanding leadership in chemical affairs in the local and larger professional community” and honors individuals who have provided distinguished service to the chemistry field.

“Receiving this award is a real honor and most importantly to me, it is a great day for science at Duquesne University—and in particular the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,” said Madura.

This award reflects the scope of Madura’s contributions, said Dr. Philip Reeder, dean of the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences. “There is no higher honor then being recognized by one’s peers for an achievement such as this, which highlights Jeff Madura’s dedication to his discipline, and to Duquesne’s educational and service missions,” Reeder said.

Madura has published more than 100 papers in physical chemistry and has received over $6 million in external research funding. He is a Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award recipient, was chair of the ACS COMP Division and is an ACS Fellow.

In 2007, Madura received the University’s Presidential Award and the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences Award—both for Excellence in Scholarship. He received the Bayer School Award for Excellence in Service in 2004.

Co-author of the textbook General Chemistry: Principles and Modern Applications, Madura also co-authored a physical chemistry solutions manual. He is currently co-editor of the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modeling.

A postdoctoral fellow at the University of Houston, Madura earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Purdue University and a B.A. from Thiel College.
