Campus Activities Provide Opportunities to Support Fair Trade
As a precursor to Fair Trade Week, free coffee and chocolate tastings will be held in the Union, College Hall and Gumberg Library through Friday, Nov. 20.
Fair Trade Week, an annual event sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services, will run from Monday, Dec. 1, through Thursday, Dec. 4.
Taking part in Fair Trade Week is a way in which the campus community can support fair wages and the improvement of living and working conditions of small farmers and producers in developing countries.
“As a Catholic, Spiritan institution, we are called to work in committed authentic relationships with those on the margins,” said Campus Minister Kate Lecci, who helped organize this year’s event. “The principles of Fair Trade are directly in line with our mission here at Duquesne; fair trade is a very Spiritan way of doing business.”

- Fair Trade Marketplace, Monday, Dec. 1, through Thursday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., PNC Atrium, 2nd floor, Union
- Movie Screening: ‘Food Chains,’ Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m., Power Center Ballroom
Following the screening, a panel discussion will feature Wilson Perez Cardona of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers; Brian Kundinger of the Alliance for Fair Food; Mike Clark, a Duquesne faculty member and WTAE-TV news anchor; and members of the Student Farmworker Alliance. Refreshments will be provided and fair trade-themed gift bags will be distributed to the first 100 attendees. - Lunch and Learn, Wednesday, Dec. 3, at noon, Africa Room, Union
Featured speaker Jairo Tenorio is the Nicaraguan project coordinator for Pittsburgh-based fair trade business Women of the Cloud Forest.
