Campus Invited to Help Create Temporary Museum with Saint-Related Artifacts

For two hours only on Thursday, Jan. 29, a museum of saints will be created in the Union NiteSpot. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program invites the University community to participate in and view this “pop-up” museum from 4 to 6 p.m.

Dr. Alima Bucciantini

“Pop-up museums have become popular the last few years around the country,” said Dr. Alima Bucciantini, assistant professor of public history, who is organizing the event. “They help engage the community in creating very temporary exhibitions and allow people behind the scenes of the curatorial process.”

Attendees are asked to bring saint-related objects—saints is the Women’s and Gender Studies Program theme this year—to the NiteSpot on Thursday, Jan. 29 to help create this instant community museum. Bucciantini will serve as the museum curator by helping to create labels and effectively display the items in this temporary exhibit. The process will be documented on film and video. After two hours, participants can take their items back—and the museum will vanish.

“Hopefully we will create something that will get people thinking about what saints are to us, both holy and secular, and also about how museum exhibitions get created,” she said.
