Inaugural Spirit of Diversity Dinner Set for March 27

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) will honor University students who are committed to academic excellence, diversity and inclusion at the inaugural Spirit of Diversity Dinner and Scholarship Benefit on Friday, March 27, in the Power Center Ballroom.

The event, which is similar in tradition of its predecessor, the Unity Banquet and Scholarship Benefit, invites members of the campus community and neighbors in the greater Pittsburgh area to listen and engage in discussion about current multicultural and social justice issues.

Dr. Richard Milner, the Helen Faison Endowed Chair of Urban Education and director of the Center for Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh, will be the keynote speaker at the Spirit of Diversity Dinner and Scholarship Benefit.

“This event is very important and special to us,” said Jeff Mallory, director of multicultural affairs. “It’s a reflection of the mission of our office as we highlight the diverse perspectives that are among us. I am deeply excited for this event and how it will bring a variety of different individuals together to learn from each other, while sharing a nice meal. This authentic approach is directly in line with our vision as an office.”

Milner, who is highly regarded for his outstanding research in the areas of policies and practices that support teacher success in urban schools, has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges and is a Teacher’s Carl A. Grant Multicultural Research Awardee.

“Dr. Milner is highly respected and recognized for his knowledge of urban education,” explained Mallory. “More importantly, Dr. Milner willingly seeks to spread his knowledge to others, which is very refreshing. We are fortunate to have him as a speaker and also fortunate to have him in the greater Pittsburgh area.”

The Spirit of Diversity Dinner and Scholarship Benefit kicks off with a reception at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Advance registration is required by this Friday, March 20.

Cost to attend is $40 or $10 for undergraduate students. The proceeds will help provide scholarship funds to University students. Tickets can be purchased online or in Room 106 of the Union. For more information, contact satterwhitea@duq.edu.
