McCants Lewis to be Honored as Woman of the Year

The Women’s Law Association (WLA) will honor Tracey McCants Lewis, assistant clinical professor of law, at its 23rd annual Woman of the Year event.

The WLA, an organization housed in the School of Law, is dedicated to raising awareness about issues affecting women. Each year, the organization recognizes an alumnus and a recent graduate who demonstrate leadership and dedication to their community.

A graduate of the law school, McCants Lewis will be honored as Woman of the Year on Wednesday, April 8, at 5 p.m. at the Common Plea Restaurant. In addition, Gabriela Steier will be honored as the Recent Graduate of the Year.

McCants Lewis, who also serves as assistant director of clinical education at the law school, teaches in the Civil Rights Clinic. Her scholarship focuses on critical race theory, feminist legal theory and the application of legal storytelling in clinical legal education.

In 2013, McCants Lewis was appointed to the Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board, and she chaired the Allegheny County Courts Administration Vision Team Committee in 2012. In addition, she was a 2012 recipient of both the NAACP Pittsburgh Homer S. Brown Award for Legal Service and the Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh Decade of Dedication Award.

Steier is an adjunct law professor at Duquesne. Her expertise focuses on food safety, policy, animal welfare and GMO (genetically modified organism) issues domestically and in the European Union. Steier is co-founder of Food Law International LLP, a new organization for the advancement and development of scholarship and interdisciplinary legal education on all aspects of international food law.
