Contract Extension Awarded to Women’s Basketball Coach

Dan Burt, the head women’s basketball coach at Duquesne, has been granted a contract extension.

Burt, who is 43-24 in two seasons as head coach, has guided the women’s program to back-to-back appearances in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. He spent six years as Duquesne’s top assistant and has been a part of seven consecutive WNIT teams.

“I want to thank Dr. Dougherty and the Board of Directors for their investment in the Duquesne women’s basketball program,” said Burt. “I look forward to continuing the excellence that we have established on the court in the Atlantic 10 Conference as well as in the classroom. I’m thankful for my players and staff who have put in tremendous time and effort to making our program what it is today.”

The 2014-15 season was one of the most successful in the history of Duquesne women’s basketball. The Dukes’ 23 victories was the third-best in program history, and the 12 Atlantic-10-Conference wins was the most ever recorded. Under Burt’s leadership as both an assistant and head coach, Duquesne is one of 18 teams in NCAA Division I that has won 20-or-more games for seven straight seasons.

In his first year as head coach, Burt was one of five NCAA Division I first-year head coaches to win 20 games. He was named a finalist for the 2014 Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award, which honors a WBCA Division I head coach who has led his or her team to a successful season during his or her first year at the helm.

During his eight total years on the Bluff, Burt has led the Dukes to 166 victories. In addition, he helped recruit and coach 10 players who earned all-conference honors a total of 18 times; eight 1,000 point scorers; and the 2008, 2009 and 2013 Atlantic 10 Defensive Players of the Year.
