Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Awards Duquesne Two-Year Grant

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) has awarded the University a two-year, $40,000 grant as part of its 2015-17 Alcohol Education Grant Program.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide this financial support to law enforcement and community- and school-based programs that combat underage and dangerous drinking,” said PLCB Chairman Tim Holden. “We know these grants will make a difference in people’s lives.”

Duquesne was one of just 24 universities to receive one of these highly competitive grants. The Office of DU CARES will use the funds in its efforts to deal with underage drinking and excessive alcohol consumption; for prevention programming; enforcement; and social-norms awareness initiatives.

“The grant money helps us to develop and create messaging that is realistic to the university-aged student,” said CARES Coordinator Dan Gittins. “That means that, while all efforts fall under the auspices that the legal drinking age is 21, there also is a realization that our culture cannot legislate all behavior. Understanding this reality, we encourage students to make decisions that won’t negatively impact their safety and success.”

DU CARES works to educate students about alcohol and other drugs, how it affects the brain at various levels of intoxication, and how that impacts decision-making, judgment and behavior. The office also presents programming, provides suggestions on maintaining a low-risk, healthy lifestyle and assists those affected by the drinking and drug use of others.
