Outstanding Educators to be Honored at Celebration of Teaching Excellence
The Center for Teaching Excellence will recognize faculty and graduate students for their creativity, effectiveness and innovation in the classroom at the upcoming annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence award ceremony.
University Provost Dr. Timothy Austin will present the awards at the event, which will take place on Thursday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.
The Creative Teaching Award recognizes faculty who utilize creativity and innovation in their teaching methods and demonstrate the impact that these methods have on student learning. This year’s winning projects both include elements of engagement with community partners:
- Dr. Alison Colbert and Dr. Melanie Turk, School of Nursing—Building Empathy: Using Simulation to Help Nursing Students Understand the Experience of Poverty
- Dr. Sarah Woodley, Department of Biological Sciences, Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences—Innovations in a Physiology Laboratory Course: Combining Novel Research and Service-Learning around a Community-Based Problem.
The Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes teaching effectiveness by graduate students through a portfolio process in which they demonstrate rigorous student learning, reflection on feedback and leadership in teaching among graduate students. The award recipients are:
- Sarah Tavela, McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts
- Cheryl Read, McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts
- Matt Srnec, Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences
- Khushbu Shah, Mylan School of Pharmacy.
The Center for Teaching Excellence will also recognize graduate students who have earned the Certificate of University Teaching as well as more than 100 Duquesne peer leaders who have served as workshop presenters, teaching award and learning assessment committee members, faculty near-peer mentors and Flourishing Academic blog contributors.
