Plenary Speakers for Integrity of Creation Conference Announced

The plenary speakers selected for the second annual Integrity of Creation conference, Protecting Our Common Home: Scientific Contributions and Religious Perspectives, bring expert knowledge and a distinct balance of theology and science to their presentations, which also tie into the event’s theme.

This year’s plenary speakers include:

  • Dr. Celia Deane-Drummond, professor of theology and director of the Center for Theology, Science and Human Flourishing at the University of Notre Dame
  • Dr. Ursula Goodenough, professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis
  • Dr. Daniel P. Scheid, associate professor of theology at Duquesne University.
Dr. Ursula Goodenough

“The plenary speakers for this year’s conference are internationally prominent academics who lead the scholarly discourse on science and religion with regard to our responsibility to protect the earth as our common home,” said Dr. Gerard Magill, chair of the conference committee and the Gallagher Chair for the Integration of Science, Theology, Philosophy and Law. “We are very fortunate to have such highly respected academics joining us for the entire conference.”

The conference will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Sept. 30, in the Power Center Ballroom.

Dr. Daniel P. Scheid

Goodenough will present on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. She is an expert in molecular and cell biology, and some of her recent research includes studies that she and her fellow investigators hope will contribute to the international effort to produce algae-based biodiesel as a transportation fuel.

Dr. Celia Deane-Drummond

Scheid will present on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 12:45 p.m. He has spent his career researching social ethics and, more specifically, ecological and comparative ethics.

Deane-Drummond will present on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m. Trained as both a scientist and a theologian, she is uniquely positioned to focus on the dialogue between theology and the sciences.
