During Peak Flu Time, Employees Can Still Get Vaccine

Peak flu season, which is typically seen during February, can last through March and April. Although the flu can be a mild illness—with individuals recovering in one to two weeks—in some instances it can cause severe complications resulting in hospitalization.

The flu is different from “the common cold.” Common symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, headaches and fatigue. Some people can experience vomiting and diarrhea.

The best way to avoid the flu is to get the flu vaccine. Employees are encouraged to call Duquesne’s Center for Pharmacy Care and Health Services on campus at 412.396.2155 to schedule an appointment to get the flu vaccine.

If you suspect you have the flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or other necessities. You should stay home from work, school, travel, shopping, social events and public gatherings. If you have flu symptoms and are very sick or concerned about your illness, contact your health care provider immediately.

During peak flu season, practice good hygiene: wash hands regularly, avoid those who are sick, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
