‘Octet’ Headlines ‘Schubert on the Bluff’ Opening Concert
The final season of the Mary Pappert School of Music’s three-year Schubert on the Bluff series kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 26, with the Viennese composer’s tuneful Octet in F Major, D. 803, contrasting with Piano Sonata in C Minor, D. 958 during the 7:30 p.m. concert in the PNC Recital Hall.
French composer Claude Debussy, whose works will also be featured this season, will be represented at the opening concert with Sonata for Cello and Piano, one of three chamber sonatas he composed during World War I.
“Sonata for Cello and Piano explores Debussy’s reactions to the horrors in the world around him in a work of wistfulness and humor,” explained David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair and artistic director of Schubert on the Bluff.
Schubert’s Gelagart unter’m duet from The Friends of Salamanca, D. 326 will also be featured at this concert.
In addition to pianist Wehr, musicians at the performance will include these music school faculty, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra members and special guests:

- Adam Liu, cello
- Aaron White, contrabass
- Ron Samuels, clarinet
- Phillip Pandolfi, bassoon
- Zachary Smith, French horn.
