Consortium for Christian-Muslim Dialogue to Host Panel Discussion on Immigration Policies

During this time of political divisiveness, the Consortium for Christian-Muslim Dialogue (CCMD) at Duquesne is focusing its efforts on engaging in dialogue and helping to educate others about current global concerns involving immigration.

As part of this endeavor, the CCMD will host Migration and Policies on Immigration—which will explore the economic, political, legal, cultural and moral implications of migration and immigration policies—on Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.

President Ken Gormley will give welcome remarks, and Dr. James Swindal, dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, will introduce the following moderator and panelists:

  • Barbara Murock, director of Immigrants and Internationals Initiative for the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (moderator)
  • Dr. Suhail Abboushi, associate professor of management and international business (panelist), Palumbo-Donahue School of Business
  • Dr. James Bailey, associate professor of theology (panelist), McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts
  • Bernadette Paolo, scholar-in-residence in the Center for African Studies (panelist)
  • Dr. Nihat Polat, associate dean for graduate studies and research, the School of Education (panelist).
Dr. Marinus Iwuchukwu

“As a Catholic institution, Duquesne has a moral duty to echo the Christian virtue of hospitality and support to strangers,” said Dr. Marinus Iwuchukwu, chair of the CCMD and the theology department. “We understand that human civilization and development have benefited enormously from fluid migration and immigration of people. As it reads in Leviticus 19:34, we must show kindness to foreigners and love them as our own.”

Migration and Policies on Immigration is organized by the CCMD and sponsored by the Division of Mission and Identity; the Honors College; the Center for African Studies; the Center for Catholic Faith and Culture; and the Department of Theology.
