Health Services Shares Winter Tips for Fighting the Flu

The Duquesne University Health Services staff wishes to remind faculty and staff that flu season is in full force. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the influenza—  or flu virus—is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and, at worst, can sometimes lead to death. The flu is different from a cold, as it comes on suddenly.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever (not everyone will have a fever)
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than in adults).

Remember to:

  • Wash your hands
  • Stay hydrated
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Moisturize your skin
  • Cover your cough.
