Campus Ministry Hosting Annual Blanket-Making Project

Spiritan Campus Ministry will host its annual blanket-making service project on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at noon in the Africa Room.

Duquesne students will give the blankets to families living in West Virginia’s southern coalfields region when they travel there for the spring break cross-cultural mission experience coordinated by Spiritan Campus Ministry.

For many residents in that region, the simple act of purchasing a baby blanket is complicated by a lack of funds, transportation and local, affordable options. According to Campus Minister Luci-Jo DiMaggio, it’s not an exaggeration to say that a baby or small child will be kept warm because people from Duquesne took an hour to help make a blanket.

For employees who want to be involved in mission trips but can’t travel due to family and work, the blanket project provides a physical and practical way to support the students and those they serve, according to Debbie Kostosky, campus minister and event coordinator.

“In a way, this is a living example of Libermann’s concept of practical union, where God is present in the everyday aspects of our lives,” Kostosky said.

Materials will be provided, though volunteers can bring their own as well (one square-yard of solid and one yard of patterned fleece). Additional donations of diapers, baby wipes and baby formula are also welcome.
