Two-Day Summit on Student Civic Learning Slated

The Office of Service Learning, Spiritan Campus Ministry and the Division of Student Life will join with the School of Education to present a two-part civic learning summit on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Monday, Feb. 24, on campus.

Dr. Matt Bundick

The summit, which is funded by a grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Bringing Theory to Practice Project, is intended to stimulate conversation and present new perspectives on how we might better develop our students’ civic learning and civic competence, as well as the best ways in which to identify the unique meaning of civic agency at Duquesne.

The first part of the summit on Feb. 13 will feature a discussion based upon Donald Harward’s Civic Provocations: The Nature and Current Relevance of Attending to the Civic from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in Rooms 505 and 506 of Rockwell Hall. Dr. Matt Bundick, assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Psychology and Special Education in the School of Education, will lead the conversation.

During the second part of the summit on Feb. 24, stakeholders from across the University will review three successful case studies of peer institutions, and participants will discuss ways in which the Catholic Spiritan mission of Duquesne aligns with the civic mission of higher education that is outlined in Civic Provocations. The discussion, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 613 of the Union, will be facilitated by Dr. Charlene Gray, executive director of Pennsylvania Campus Compact, an organization dedicated to the civic mission of higher education in the state of Pennsylvania.
