CCIT’s ‘Mystery of the Crucified One’ Invites Discussion of Depictions of Crucifixion

The Center for Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CCIT) hosts The Mystery of the Crucified One in Byzantine Hymnography and Iconography—the fourth reception in the Catholic Artistic Imagination series—on Thursday, March 20. The reception, with wine and hors d’oeuvres, will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Africa Room in the Union.

The informal showcase of Byzantine art is an opportunity to be immersed in discussion with Dr. Bogdan Bucur, associate theology professor, who teaches a popular class on visual representations of Jesus, and colleagues from around the University.

This event and the entire Catholic Artistic Imagination series, said Dr. Darlene Weaver, director of CCIT, is “an opportunity to discuss beautiful, thought-provoking works with interesting people.”

This series is part of the larger mission of CCIT to foster a broad and inclusive understanding of Catholic intellectual tradition. “University life often comes with boundaries between division and disciplines,” Weaver said. “The receptions are meant to provide a space where people from different sectors of the University can come together. Our hope is that, over time, scholarly and co-curricular collaboration can begin to develop.”

Faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome to attend the reception and should RSVP.
