Workshop Series to Help Business Owners to Develop Exit Plans

Transitions can be hard—and business transitions can be grueling, even fail in the last moments of a deal. A survey by M&A Today shows that 85 percent of business owners don’t have an exit plan and 65 percent don’t know the value of their company.

A two-part workshop sponsored by Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is designed to help business owners with making plans to sell or transfer their business or to retire.

Exit Planning for Your Business will be detailed in two Friday workshops on campus on Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The sessions will focus on:

  • Preparations for transition
  • Taxes and valuation
  • Overall discussion of transitional planning
  • Obtaining appraisals
  • Options for selling and financing
  • Negotiating and sealing the deal
  • Financing and succession options
  • Communications with employees and vendors about the sale.

Speakers will include experts from financial, legal, tax and merger-and-acquisition fields, said Christine Hughes, SBDC training manager.
