Graduate Humanity Degrees: Three National Experts to Share Success Stories

What path is there for an advanced humanities degree outside of academia? Three women who have found such paths will share their experiences at Careers in Media, a free, public forum from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

The event, in Room 104 College Hall, will feature:

• Rebecca Onion, history editor for Slate
• Lois Raimondo, photographer for the Washington Post and New York Times as well as the Schott Chair of Journalism at West Virginia University
• Lindsey Albracht, a 2013 graduate of the McAnulty Graduate School of Liberal Arts, who is an intern for Slate’s podcast Culture Gabfest and a doctoral candidate at the City University of New York.

The Department of English and the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts (JMA) are co-sponsoring the event to help those who love the humanities learn about using their degrees in nontraditional ways and to inform the public about breaking into careers in the media.

“The skills graduate school cultivates—research, analysis, communication, critical thinking and a curiosity about the world—are valuable in all sorts of professions, not just academia,” said Dr. Greg Barnhisel, chair of the English department. “These panelists will offer some real-world, practical advice and perspective on another career path.”

New and emerging media platforms are creating opportunities for students to leverage skills and knowledge across a wide range of pursuits and professions, added Dr. Mike Dillon, JMA department chair.

“Traditional borders between professions are fast disappearing,” Dillon said. “Events like this show that proficiency with media concepts and platforms prepares graduate students for connections and careers they might not have considered otherwise.”
