Espionage, Intelligence and Ethics: Hayden and Warrick Share Their Views

Gen. Michael V. Hayden and Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Joby Warrick shared their views of national security with an audience of about 450 Tuesday evening in the Power Center.

A Conversation with General Michael Hayden was hosted by the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts and moderated by President-Elect and Law Professor Ken Gormley.

Hayden, a two-time Duquesne alumnus and the only person to lead both the Central Intelligence Agency and National Security Administration, served in U.S. intelligence and security under both political parties and has recently published a memoir, Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror.

Warrick, a writer with the Washington Post and author of Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, talked about the challenges of covering national security issues.

Hayden described decisions not as an ultimate face-off between good and evil but as striking a balance between two competing virtues, such as privacy and national security.
