Duquesne University is again one of just three locations nationwide selected to host the National Jazz Workshop, which is credited with setting the standard of excellence for students, educators and performers who are serious about the American art form of the genre.

“Offering a section of the National Jazz Workshop right here in Pittsburgh not only exposes music lovers of all ages to the jazz idiom, but also showcases the incredible amount of talent we have locally,” said Workshop Director Mike Tomaro, who is director of jazz studies in the Mary Pappert School of Music.

The National Jazz Workshop is hosted by Tomaro and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra at the City Music Center.

Featured clinicians Jones, Aliquo Jr. and Tomaro join other clinicians and faculty such as Roger Humphries (drums) and Mark Koch (guitar) as well as various members of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, including Marty Ashby (guitar); Jeff Bush (trombone); Emmett Goods (trombone); Alton Merrell (piano); James Moore (trumpet); Paul Thompson (bass); and Tom Wendt (drums).

“It’s going to be a great week of jazz that you won’t want to miss,” added Tomaro, who also is a professor of jazz studies, jazz saxophone and composition at Duquesne.

The workshop curriculum offers both performance and non-performance options for arranging, studio recording, performance and observation tracks. There will be multiple big bands with daily rehearsals and master classes on a wide variety of topics.
