Distinguished Speaker Series Brings Harvard Professor to Campus

Dr. Stephen Walt will discuss foreign policy and new strategies for America in the latest installment of the Raymond J. Kelley Endowed Chair Distinguished Speaker in International Relations Series.

Walt, the Robert and Renee Belfer Professor of International Affairs at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, will present A New Grand Strategy for America, on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 104 of College Hall. The series is free and open to the public.

“With his impressive list of scholarly publications and his important role in debating America’s overseas role through his Foreign Policy magazine blog, Dr. Walt is a wonderful addition to our list of speakers,” said Kelley Endowed Chair Dr. Clifford Bob, chair of political science in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts. “Dr. Walt is one of the world’s foremost scholars of international security and American foreign policy. In this election year, when America’s foreign policy direction is strongly debated, he argues for a restrained rather than interventionist strategy to guide our next President.”

The Raymond J. Kelley Endowed Chair Distinguished Speaker in International Relations Series, which launched in 2013, typically features two to three presentations each year. The next presentation, which will address European anti-terrorism policies, will be held in November at a to-be-determined date.

The series is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh. For more information, contact the political science department at 412.396.6485.
