Leading Scholar of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman to Speak in Pittsburgh

The National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS), a non-profit affiliated with Duquesne, will hold the Fall 2016 Newman Lecture featuring a look at how Cardinal Newman’s times and circumstances influenced his choice of subjects, arguments and conclusions.

The lecture will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. at the Heinz Chapel, 4200 Fifth Avenue, Oakland. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Cambridge University Professor Eamon Duffy, one of the pre-eminent historians in the Catholic Church, will lecture on Words in Season: Newman’s Preaching Reconsidered. It is part of a study on interpreting Cardinal Newman’s preaching that is soon to be published by the Oxford University Press.

Monday’s lecture will be followed by a workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at NINS, 211 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh.

“Professor Duffy attended the school Newman founded in Birmingham, England, and has had a lifelong interest in Newman and his thought,” said Kenneth Parker, interim executive director of NINS and the Steber Professor in theological studies at Saint Louis University. “As one of the most renowned Roman Catholic historians of our times, this is a rare opportunity to hear him speak, and engage in a dialogue with him in a workshop.
