Catholic Artistic Imagination Series Explores the Importance of ‘Silence’

The Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition is focusing on Shusaku Endo’s critically acclaimed novel Silence for its fall 2016 Catholic Artistic Imagination series.

Silence tells the story of two Portuguese Jesuit priests sent to 17th century Japan, which is hostile toward their religion. The two are eventually captured forced to watch their Christian brothers die for their faith and witness cruelties that test their own beliefs.

Participants in the series who read Silence are invited to join a discussion examining the book’s themes on Monday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m., in Room 119 of the Union. Dr. Darlene Weaver, director of the Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, will facilitate the conversation.

In addition, participants are invited to go see Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming film adaptation of Silence when the movie is released to audiences in December.
