New Director of the Center for Healthcare Ethics Named

Dr. Joris Gielen has been named director of the Center for Healthcare Ethics in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts.

“In collaboration with my colleagues, I would like to further develop the global dimension of our center by further expanding research, teaching and service that emphasizes the ethical aspects of health care as a global phenomenon connecting people and the environment across continents,” said Gielen, who has served as an associate professor of health care ethics in the center since 2014.

Prior to joining Duquesne, Gielen worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Leuven in Belgium and completed a postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Foundation – Flanders, a Belgian public research council.

Gielen earned a Ph.D. in theology as well as master’s degrees in theology, religious studies and history from the University of Leuven. In addition, he earned a master’s of arts in Indian philosophy and religion from Banaras Hindu University.
