Law School Event Reflects on Historic Decision-Making of PA Supreme Court

Members of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court, the oldest appellate court in North America, will join the School of Law for an event celebrating a new, acclaimed book that delves into legal history in the Keystone State and the United States.

The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania: Life and Law in the Commonwealth,1684-2017Named for a book edited by John J. Hare, The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania: Life and Law in the Commonwealth,1684-2017 will be held in the Power Center Ballroom at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, following the court’s session in Pittsburgh.

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas G. Saylor will deliver opening remarks, followed by a presentation by Hare, a 1993 law school graduate. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania describes the court’s powers and structure; and it calls out notable cases of constitutional law, civil rights, torts, criminal law, labor law and administrative law, among other subjects.

President Ken Gormley, a constitutional law scholar, will provide an overview of the court’s historic decision-making. Esteemed justices, judges and lawyers from the Commonwealth will address specific topics involving the Supreme Court and its administrative powers.
