Duquesne Again Recognized Among Nation’s Top Green Colleges

Duquesne is again one of the country’s most environmentally responsible colleges, according to The Princeton Review’s 2018 Guide to 399 Green Colleges. Of 648 schools receiving green ratings, Duquesne is among the 399 schools classified in the 80th percentile or higher.

The guide provides information about the colleges’ admission requirements, cost and financial aid, and student body facts and statistics. Detailed “Green Facts” write-ups report on everything from the schools’ use of renewable energy, recycling and conservation programs, to the availability of environmental studies and career guidance for green jobs.

“We are proud to have published this guide since 2010, but we are particularly pleased to release our 2018 edition at this time, as October has been designated National Campus Sustainability Month,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief. “To all students wanting to study and live at a green college, we strongly recommend the outstanding schools we identify and profile in this guide.”

Duquesne received an 82 out of a 99 total “green rating” from The Princeton Review for its commitment to sustainability.

The University’s sustainability efforts include:

  • Des Places Hall, a suite-style residence hall, earned Gold LEED certification. The building was specifically designed and constructed with sustainability and energy conservation in mind.
  • The Power Center earned Silver LEED certification.
  • The 2016 steam plant expansion project encompassed new state-of-the-art modern boilers that have tripled campus steam capacity and reduced the overall environmental and carbon footprint on Duquesne’s 50-acre campus.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Duquesne University as the Individual Conference Champion of the 2016-17 College & University Green Power Challenge for using more green power than any other school in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
