Psychology Workshop to Examine Concerns in Community-Based Scholarship

An upcoming Department of Psychology workshop will explore epistemological, ethical and design concerns in community-based scholarship.

The 2019 Distinguished Speakers Workshop will be held Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 24, in Rockwell Hall. The first session from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday is free and open to the public. Saturday and Sunday sessions are open to psychologists looking to earn continuing education (CE) credits.

Dr. Michelle Fine, distinguished professor of critical psychology, women’s studies and urban education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will lead the workshop. Fine is a founding co-director of the Public Science Project, a research collective of academics, educators, activists and community members dedicated to participatory action research in social justice.

The workshop also will address research methods such as mapping, focus groups, creative auto-ethnographic writing and participatory survey design. Participants will learn how to apply a wide range of research techniques appropriate to community-based research, develop collaborative relationships with community partners and plan a research proposal for a community-based research project, among other skills.
