CTE Brings STEM and Inclusion Expert to Campus for Teaching Workshops

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will welcome to campus Dr. Jenn Weaver, associate director for university teaching at the California Institute of Technology’s Center for Teaching, Learning and Outreach. She will hold two workshops Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Creating Inclusive Classrooms in STEM will examine how stereotype threat and unconscious bias can manifest in classrooms. It will be held in Power Center Ballroom A from 12:15 to 1:40 p.m., preceded by a light lunch available to registrants at 11:45 a.m.

Active Learning in a Lecture Hall, which will explore strategies for engaging students in large lecture classes, will be held in room 104 of College Hall from 3:05 to 4:20 p.m.

Both sessions are free and open to the campus community. Space is limited and registration is required.

Weaver’s areas of expertise include active learning, retention in STEM disciplines, inclusive classrooms and course design. She inaugurated the faculty course on teaching in university STEM at the California Institute of Technology and received the Emerging Leader award from Victoria College at the University of Toronto in 2018.
