Blended Synchronous Classrooms Coming to Duquesne

New classrooms that provide the ability to teach online and face-to-face (F2F) students simultaneously via technology and Zoom video conferencing are now being piloted at Duquesne.

Known as blended synchronous learning environments (BSLE), these innovative settings allow for instruction, flexibility and collaboration among the F2F and distance students that can blur the line between the physical and digital worlds. This learning environment design will help to expand Duquesne’s reach by transforming how classes can be offered to those who aren’t physically present in the classroom.

Several departments from Academic Affairs are working together to develop the new learning environment. In addition to standard classroom technology offerings, BSLE rooms will be equipped with higher quality audio systems and large flat screens to display the online student participants. Training and support will be provided to prepare instructors to successfully teach in the complex blended synchronous classroom.

The BSLE development group, which includes representatives from the School of Education, the Center for Teaching Excellence, Educational Technology, Office of Classroom Technologies and Online Learning & Strategy, is looking for volunteers willing to pilot these spaces and teach in this manner. If you are interested in participating in a BSLE faculty learning community, please contact the Center for Teaching Excellence.
