Stepping Up: The Rev. Bill Christy, C.S.Sp., Spiritan Campus Ministry

As University chaplain and director of Spiritan campus ministry, the Rev. Bill Christy, C.S.Sp., is used to celebrating Mass and providing in-person counsel to support members of Duquesne’s campus community. Despite challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact on campus operations, Fr. Bill’s continued work is a reminder of the University’s strength and togetherness.

During the required move-out period for student residents in March, Fr. Bill wrote a simple yet inspirational message throughout campus on windows and sidewalks to promote solidarity among the Duquesne community. The message left students, parents, faculty and staff feeling uplifted, during a time of disruption and uncertainty.

“What Fr. Bill chalked on the campus is inspirational and still relevant today,” observed the Rev. Ray French, C.S.Sp. “Be Patient, Be Kind, Be Brave and Have Faith!”

Since Duquesne transitioned to remote instruction, Fr. Bill has been presenting one-minute reflections almost daily on Spiritan campus ministry’s YouTube channel, which also are posted to campus ministry’s social media accounts.

His reflections offer Biblical readings, prayer and hope on topics ranging from Jesus’ sacred heart to serving others. Fr. Bill often reminds the campus community that we are united in spirit, despite the current circumstances.

“The Spirit continues to lead us and the Spirit continues to guide us in these times of uncertainty,” said Fr. Bill during his May 4 reflection. “Our only constant is that we will be led by the Spirit.”

Thank you, Fr. Bill, for providing much-needed support and encouragement!
