Stepping Up: Dr. Anthony Kane, Office of Residence Life

When the University transitioned to remote learning in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and government requirements, nearly all Duquesne student residents moved back to their permanent residences to finish the school year. Campus operations also were modified, resulting in most Duquesne employees working remotely from home offices.

For Dr. Anthony Kane, assistant director of Residence Life and resident director in Assumption Hall, his “home” office remains at Duquesne’s campus.

In March, a small number of students who were unable to move off campus for various reasons were relocated to Vickroy Hall, and resident directors adjusted their typical living situations as needed. Since then, Anthony has continued to work with campus departments to ensure these students are supported.

Anthony has spent hours making personal Zoom calls and office visits with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to check on his students. He also attended the schools’ virtual preview days to answer parents’ questions and assure prospective students that they will be well cared for during their time at Duquesne.

“Anthony Kane walked into the Office of Residence Life seven years ago and had an immediate impact on our department,” said Sharon Oelschlager, assistant vice president for residence life. “Anthony demonstrated his excellent leadership skills this summer as he managed the central office while the University operated remotely. He is well loved by students, as he is kind and caring, but holds students accountable and administers ‘tough love’ when necessary. I am grateful for his service and his dedication.”

Anthony first joined Duquesne in April 2013 as an administrative intern in the Office of Residence Life and then in the Office of Greek Life. He was hired as an assistant resident director and became resident director of Towers Living Learning Center from 2014-2018 before his promotion to assistant director of Residence Life in 2018. Most recently, Anthony is working with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in serving students.

“In the past two months, especially, Dr. Kane has shown what it means to be a supporting leader,” said Kai Javois, assistant resident director in Towers. “He has a methodical approach that has helped us to serve our students on campus to the best of our abilities during this time. He has taken the time to listen and learn the students’ stories and understand how we can best support them.”

Thank you, Anthony, for your commitment to our students’ wellbeing on and off campus!
