Wecht Institute to Present Forensic Retrospective on 9/11
As the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, approaches, the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law will delve into the event’s lessons and impact during its 20th annual symposium.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend 9/11 at 20 Years: A Forensic Retrospective, Thursday, Sept. 9, and Friday, Sept. 10, in the Union Ballroom.
The event will feature a variety of experts providing insight on the tragic events of that historic day and its aftermath. During the past two decades, forensic scientists have learned much from 9/11—from DNA identification and evidence collection at mass disaster scenes to the diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and communal trauma.
Experts from fields such as DNA analysis, anthropology, psychology and social work will give presentations and serve as panelists during the symposium, which also will be livestreamed.
Included among the symposium speakers are:
- Retired FBI Special Agent Andrea Dammann, who led the evidence recovery operation at the site of the United Flight 93 crash in Shanksville, Pa., together with retired FBI Special Agent Roy Cavan
- Professional archaeologist Scott A. Warnasch, who was senior anthropologist of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s World Trade Center Operations.
The annual Wecht symposium highlights Duquesne’s commitment to expanding student horizons by offering special programs that offer insight and reflection on important moments in the nation’s history.
Continuing education credits are available for professionals in specific fields. Visit the Wecht Institute website for more information and to register for the event.
