Handy Charging Outlets Installed on Campus for Digital Devices

Electrical outlets in public areas across campus are being upgraded with a fixture that allows direct charging—without a transformer—of digital devices.

The new outlets have two USB ports wired to an integral transformer that supplies DC power for charging smartphones, tablets and laptops as well as either two or three grounded AC power outlets for other types of electrical devices.

Approximately 150 new outlets have been installed, and an equal number will be in place by the end of September, with funds available to purchase additional units should they be needed according to Mike Bryer, a facilities management maintenance supervisor.

Not needing to pack a transformer is a clear benefit for students, faculty and staff on the go, and the USB ports’ circuitry can supply a rapid charge to draining batteries. An additional benefit is that any existing electrical outlet can be upgraded within just a few minutes.

The fourth floor of Gumberg Library, which received the new receptacles in a common seating area last summer as part of a renovation project, was the first to receive the outlet upgrade. Other upgraded areas include locations in the School of Nursing as well as in College and Rockwell halls.

The units, which retail for about $30 each, are available through the Duquesne University Computer Store.
