Faculty Invited to Nominate Liberal Arts Students for Community Service Award

Faculty members are urged to nominate liberal arts majors who have performed exceptional service for the annual Paul Sciullo II Award for Community Service. This recognition is named in honor of the psychology department alumnus and Pittsburgh police officer who was killed on duty in Stanton Heights in 2009.

Paul Sciullo II

The award celebrates community service performed by graduating seniors in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts in diverse areas, such as:

  • Working with disabled or developmentally delayed children
  • Creating after-school programs
  • Fostering adult literacy
  • Addressing environmental degradation
  • Enhancing public comfort and safety
  • Supporting crisis centers
  • Supporting refugee and migrant worker efforts
  • Distributing food and/or clothing to the poor and elderly.

The recipient receives a plaque to acknowledge their generosity and dedication. At a special ceremony, the recipient will meet the Sciullo family, the selection committee, Dean James Swindal and the Rev. Ray French, C.S.Sp., vice president for mission and identity, then speak about the challenges and rewards of his/her experience.

Students may be self-nominated or nominated by faculty members, with the application package forwarded to Dr. Daniel Burston, chair of the selection committee and an associate professor of psychology, by Friday, Feb. 28.

Nominees must have performed significant community service beyond curricular requirements. Nominations must include:

  • A cover letter
  • A letter of reference from at least one faculty sponsor or one on-site supervisor
  • A personal statement about the impact of performing service on the candidate’s personal development and outlook on life (no more than two typed, single-spaced pages).

The selection committee includes: Dr. Kathy Glass, Department of English; Dr. Susan Goldberg, Department of Psychology; Dr. Dennis Woytek, Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts; Laura Miller, Department of History; and Michael Peters, Sciullo’s friend and mentor.
