Women’s History Month Concludes with Keynote ‘Blessed Among All Women’

The celebration of Women’s History Month events at the University will conclude this week with Blessed Among All Women: The Subversive Power of Female Saints, a keynote address from Robert Ellsberg, editor in chief and publisher of Orbis Books, which is the publishing arm of Maryknoll.

Robert Ellsberg

Sponsored by the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, Ellsberg’s address will be held tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom with a reception to follow.

Ellsberg will share the stories of women who questioned authority, defied restrictive codes and models of behavior, and who were renowned for their audacity and wit in surmounting the obstacles placed in their paths. Blessed Among All Women reflects upon the challenge of the church and the world today to recognize these qualities that mark the lives of so many holy women, despite the tendency to emphasize stereotypically feminine virtues of purity, humble service, obedience or patient endurance in stories of female saints.

Women’s History Month is held in March to recognize the role that women have played in shaping the world throughout history. For more information on any of the Women’s History Month events, email Women’s and Gender Studies at wsgs@duq.edu.
