Uptown Jazz Series Concert to Highlight Bebop

Fans of the Mary Pappert School of Music’s Uptown Jazz Series (UJS) will be treated to an evening of bebop tunes by jazz greats Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk at the series’ next concert.

Mike Tomaro

The UJS is focusing on the theme The Evolution of Jazz, with the series’ six concerts chronicling the specific eras in jazz history. The next performance—slated for Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Genesius Theater—will feature bebop, a style of jazz developed in the early to mid-1940s in the United States.

The six-concert UJS series features a core group of music school faculty members and special guest performers under the direction of Mike Tomaro, professor of jazz studies, jazz saxophone and composition. He developed this year’s theme, organizes and arranges all of the series’ music, and performs during each concert.

The concert’s program will feature the following numbers:

  • Ornithology, by Charlie Parker and Benny Harris
  • A Night in Tunisia, by Dizzy Gillespie
  • Shaw ‘Nuff, by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker
  • Hot House by Tadd Dameron
  • ‘Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk
  • Well, You Needn’t by Thelonious Monk.

General admission is $10 for each concert. For more information, visit www.duq.edu/UptownJazz.
