Good for You, Green and Thrifty: Bike to Work Day
If you’ve ever been tempted to bike to campus—or already do—you might find new riding partners, shortcuts and bike trails as the campus marks National Bike to Work Day, coordinated by Bike Pittsburgh, on Friday, May 18.
Dr. David Lampe, associate professor of biological sciences, and his cycling colleagues will staff a table with goodie bags for bike commuters near the Forbes Plaza bike racks, offering doughnuts, coffee and treats as well as information on bike routes and gear for those interested in bicycle commuting.
Since last May, Lampe has made the 24-mile round-trip to Duquesne from Shaler Township by bike regularly and figures he’s logged about 3,000 miles in nearly a year. Lampe was propelled into bike commuting by the cost of gas, the cost of parking and the exercise benefits—as well as the green benefits for all.
“Pittsburgh has developed a nice network of bike trails; you don’t have to fight traffic on a busy road if you don’t want to,” advised Lampe.

“Remember,” Lampe said, “the University mission stresses creation care, so what better way than not burning gas or getting road rage?”
