Symposium to Address Challenges of Unconventional Shale Gas Extraction

The Center for Environmental Research and Education (CERE) will host Facing the Challenges, a two-day symposium that will explore the challenges of unconventional shale gas extraction on Monday, Nov. 25, and Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the Power Center Ballroom.

“The impacts of unconventional shale gas extract go way beyond the well pad,” said Dr. John Stolz, professor of biology and director of the CERE. “We’re excited to have this many scientists and experts in one place and time to discuss their studies.”

Facing the Challenges will feature more than two dozen academic researchers who will present their findings regarding these topics:

  • Biological, geological and environmental investigations
  • Fugitive methane migration and climate change
  • Air and water quality
  • Human and animal health
  • Social, political and legal aspects.

A full agenda for the two-day symposium is available online.

The symposium, which is sponsored by the Heinz Endowments, the Claneil Foundation, the Colcom Foundation and The George Gund Foundation, is free and open to the public.
