Faculty & Staff Spotlight

Dr. Joel Fishman, assistant director for lawyer services in the School of Law’s Center for Legal Information, spoke on Pennsylvania Constitutional Law and History at a Pittsburgh Paralegal Association meeting on Aug. 18. The meeting was the fourth annual American Bar Association Law Day, Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges.

Amelia Michele Joiner, assistant professor of law, has published an article, The ADAAA: Opening the Floodgates, in the San Diego Law Review (Vol. 47, No. 2, Spring 2010). This article, which is Joiner’s first publication, addresses the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

James Vota, instructor in the Journalism and Multimedia Arts Department, will be recognized by Pittsburgh Magazine and Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project as 40 Under 40, one of the 40 talented individuals under the age of 40 who are making a positive impact on the region’s development.

Vota designed The ALT Project, an annual field production that takes students on trips to produce documentaries of the cultures and landscapes they experience. In 2008, the ALT Project documentary, Collecting Somedays, received two Telly Awards (Entertainment and Low Budget categories) for its story of Western national parks and Indian reservations. The film also documented the trip of then-graduate assistant Nick Sinagra, who made the journey in his ventilator-equipped wheelchair.

More recently, Vota led a team of Duquesne students, faculty and alumni on a trip using modern equipment that traced the Pony Express Trail, attempting to meet or beat the record time set by horseback riders 150 years ago. The film, 7 Days, 17 Hours, received Tellys in the Entertainment and Low-budget categories and earned a People’s Choice Award from the public, peers and industry enthusiasts.

Honorees for the 12th annual 40 Under 40 awards were selected from a pool of more than 200 candidates by a panel of independent judges. The recipients will be guests of honor at a celebration in November and featured in the November issue of Pittsburgh Magazine.
